PATH Ventures Clients Serve Dinner at PATH Achieve Glendale

PATH Ventures Clients Serve Dinner

On Friday, May 23rd, clients of Glendale Housing Now—a PATH Ventures program—served dinner to the clients at the PATH Achieve Glendale (PAG)transitional shelter program. Many of the clients from Glendale Housing Now have connections to PAG, as they’ve either stayed in the transitional program themselves or have received case management services from the Access Center. One of the Housing Now participants came up the idea of serving dinner when asked what kind of activities she would be interested in doing with PATH Ventures program participants.

Housing Now clients were excited to serve the clients tasty food, having spent time in shelters and knowing how special it is when groups come to cook delicious meals. One of the Housing Now clients was a former caterer and headed up the project. All of the clients set some of their own money aside to contribute to the budget for the meal. The clients came early and prepared an extravagant Middle Eastern meal including beef and chicken kabobs. Their case manager, Maria Carr, says she was “very impressed by the effort and energy my clients put forth and how much it meant to them to be able to give back to their community.” Housing Now clients also enjoyed interacting with the PAG clients and some, who had previously stayed at PAG themselves, discussed the enormous difference that the PAG program made in transforming their lives. PAG clients graciously enjoyed the meal, wrapping it up by giving Housing Now clients a standing ovation for their service.

PATH Ventures launches the Welcome Home Fund

An ambitious fundraising drive to raise $100,000 to help over 50 homeless families move into their own homes

Goal: To establish a $100,000 fund to help homeless families and adults move into their new homes. This helps with security deposit, first and last month’s rent, and move-in assistance.

The Need Is Great. Currently, PATH Ventures has worked hard to develop a “Housing Now” program that helps families and adults with long-term rental assistance. Families pay 30% of their income towards rent. In order for families and individuals to move into these apartments, they need the upfront resources to move in—this includes security deposit, first and last month’s rent, and move-in assistance.

Over $1 million has been raised through government and foundation grants to help homeless people obtain apartments. This also includes case managers that help these new home renters with employment, life skills, mental health and substance abuse services. For every million, we need $100,000 to help people move into their new homes.

Your Support Will Make A Difference. $2,500 will move one family into a new apartment. This includes security deposit, first and last month’s rent, and move-in assistance, like furniture and appliances. Remember, these families have subsidized rent, and we have landlords willing to rent to them. All we need is the move-in expenses.

100% of the fund will go toward helping a homeless family or individual move into their new home. All administrative expenses are paid by the long-term rental assistance grant.

Join The Welcome Home Committee. By helping one family move into an apartment, you will be a member of this committee. We will send each family a welcome home card listing the Welcome Home Committee, and we will list all committee members on our website.

This Fund Works. It has helped families like Nadine and her 11 year old son Brian. Nadine suffers from depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Her son has a developmental disability. They were made homeless when the friend they were living with sold her home. Without a safe place to call home, Nadine was unable to keep her job. PATH Ventures’ Long Beach Housing Now program was able to find an apartment for Nadine and Brian and also a monthly rental subsidy and services for them. Since then, Nadine was able to get a part-time job with the local school district and is focusing on her education. She has 3 semesters remaining at California State University Long Beach in the Global Logistics program which will lead to a job that will pull her and her son out of poverty.

An Innovative “Venture” to End Homelessness PATH Ventures to launch new integrated housing models for LA’s homeless

(Los Angeles) -- Local housing officials and community leaders join efforts to introduce new housing models for PATH Ventures, a nonprofit housing development agency. PATH Ventures is promoting new integrated housing models for Los Angeles County, as well as launching new efforts to build 1,000 units of permanent affordable housing over the next five years. Currently, 120 housing units are in development.

John Molloy, retired CEO of the Community Redevelopment Agency of Los Angeles, and Harreld Adams, the former Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) CEO, are among other former public officials and community leaders in the housing and banking industries comprising the PATH Ventures Board of Directors.

“Los Angeles needs housing developers who will bring innovation and entrepreneurship to address our housing crisis," said Los Angeles City Council President Eric Garcetti. “I'm excited about the road that PATH Ventures is going to take us down.”

The PATH Ventures board recently appointed Shane Murphy Goldsmith as its Executive Director. Goldsmith is the former Senior Housing Legislative Deputy for Councilmember Garcetti. “Shane Goldsmith has been a trusted advisor and a friend to me for many years,” said Garcetti. “Her knowledge of housing policy is only matched by her passion for ending homelessness. I’m confident that her leadership will help PATH Ventures really make a
difference.”

“To build 1,000 units of housing over the next five years is a hefty goal,” said Julie Downey, Deputy City Attorney, City of Los Angeles (Ret.) and PATH Ventures Board President. “I am confident that Ms. Goldsmith’s extensive housing and homelessness experience combined with her background in policy will enable her to provide results-oriented leadership to lead the PATH Ventures team in the right direction.”

Other PATH Ventures Board members include notables such as Sharon Fong, Union Bank; relocation specialist Robert Shober; retired Community Development Department executive Barker Khorasanee; Public Interest Attorney Paul Freese, and Fair Housing expert Sharron Hillary.

“We are grateful to have such extensive leadership at PATH Ventures,” says Joel John Roberts, chief executive officer of PATH Partners (PATH Ventures is a member of PATH Partners. See www.pathpartners.org for more information). “The significant lack of affordable housing and the
overwhelming number of people who are homeless in Los Angeles County calls for more leadership in this area.”

As a nonprofit affordable housing and economic development agency, PATH Venture’s mission is to improve individual lives and communities by increasing quality affordable housing and creating opportunities for economic, civic, and personal empowerment. This new housing initiative is part of the agency’s strategic mission to develop more integrated housing
opportunities for people in the Los Angeles region.

Some of PATH Ventures’ integrated housing models include:

  • Step Housing – Residential developments that have both permanent affordable housing and temporary interim housing units under one roof. In this model, long-term rents support the operation of temporary interim housing. Temporary housing units become converted to permanent housing units after a set period of time.

  • Villas – Residential developments that offer housing to diverse populations of people in need, including homeless families, seniors, transitional-aged youth, adults, and chronically homeless individuals.

  • Direct Housing – Housing that provides immediate entry into permanent housing through a subsidized leasing program. This type of housing utilizes and coordinates existing market-rate rental housing units that are scattered throughout the community.
